Whiteboards
Some thoughts are easier to draw than to write. A whiteboard in Culma is a note like any other. It sits in the sidebar, has a title, shows up in search, can be linked, and keeps its history. It just opens onto an endless canvas instead of a page.
Open How Culma Fits Together to see one.
Making one
Click the + next to All notes or any folder, and choose New whiteboard.
The tools
Every tool has a one-letter shortcut:
| Tool | Key | |
|---|---|---|
| Select | S | Pick, move, resize and rotate things |
| Hand | H | Move around the canvas (or just scroll) |
| Pen | P | Draw freehand |
| Marker | M | A wide, translucent highlighter stroke |
| Rectangle | R | Boxes, with text inside if you double-click |
| Ellipse | E | Circles and ovals |
| Line | L | Straight lines |
| Arrow | A | Arrows that stay attached to the shapes they connect |
| Text | T | Words anywhere on the canvas |
| Image | I | Place a picture |
Colors, fill and line width are in the toolbar. Ctrl+Z undoes, Page Up and Page Down bring the selected things forward or send them back, and Ctrl+scroll zooms.
Good to know
- Links work in whiteboards, too. Type
[[and a note's title in any text on the canvas, and the whiteboard shows up in that note's backlinks. - Documents are whiteboards. A PDF or a web page you bring in becomes a whiteboard whose pages are pictures, so every tool here works on them. See Documents and Websites.
- Dark mode just works. Whiteboards are made on white paper, and Culma inverts the lightness of every color on a dark screen, so a light blue stays blue rather than turning orange.
- They're open files. A whiteboard is saved as a standard SVG image that opens in any web browser or graphics program.
