Finding Things
Search your vault
Press Ctrl+K, or click the search box at the top of the sidebar, and start typing.
- Culma looks through titles, folders and the text of every note, whiteboards included. The words on the pages of a PDF or a captured web page are searched too (see Documents and Websites).
- Word order doesn't matter. "roadmap project" finds a note called Project Roadmap, and also a note in a Project folder that mentions a roadmap.
- It finds by meaning, too. Search for "holiday" and a note about your vacation in Portugal can turn up, marked Found by meaning. This works in many languages and runs entirely on your device.
- Press Enter to open a result right where it matched.
- Nothing found? The last row offers to create a note with exactly the title you typed.
Find in a note
Ctrl+F searches the note in front of you. F3 jumps to the next match and Shift+F3 to the previous one, even after you've closed the bar. In a document, it finds words on the pages.
Answers from your own notes
If you set up an assistant under Preferences → Assistant, Culma can do more with what you've written:
- Ask a question in the search box, and get a short answer drawn from your notes. Every sentence points to the note it came from, so you can check it.
- Ask this note in the toolbar lets you ask about the note you're reading.
- Tidy this text suggests a cleaned-up version of rough notes. Nothing changes until you accept it.
You choose which model to use, including ones that run on your own computer, so your notes don't have to leave it. Only the question and the passages it is answered from are ever sent to a model, never the vault.
One assistant for the whole vault
If you own a vault, you can share a model with everyone in it, your other devices and the people you've invited alike. Edit an endpoint under Preferences → Assistant and turn on Share with vault. Members see it in their own list by its name and who shared it, and nothing else.
- Serve it from this device keeps the address and the key on your machine. A member's question travels the same encrypted channel their notes do, your device puts it to the model, and the answer goes back the same way. This is how a model running on your own computer, such as Ollama, can answer for a colleague or for your phone, and how a paid account can work for a vault without its key leaving your machine. It answers while your device is awake and online, and the row says when it isn't.
- Without it, the endpoint and its key travel sealed to every member's devices, which each call the model directly. Use a scoped key with a spending limit.
- Sharing is withdrawn the moment you switch the assistant off on that device.
An owner also decides whether members may send the vault's notes to remote models of their own, under For this vault on the same page. A model on a member's own machine is always allowed.
